Our Giving Fund: Fighting Poverty in H2/2023

In 2023, more than 7,200 donors made our top recommendations or donated to our donation fund in the area of Fighting Poverty with 9.3 million euros in total supported. OurGiving Fund: Fighting Poverty received a total of EUR 3.6 million in 2023, of which EUR 2.15 million in the second half of the year (EUR 7 million from Germany and CHF 2.1 million from Switzerland). In consultation with our appraiser GiveWell the funds for the 2nd half of the year support the Malaria Consortiumone of our top recommendations for seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) in Mozambique.

This funding is part of GiveWell’s broader support to the Malaria Consortium. Between November 2023 and January 2024, GiveWell has provided or recommended a total of approximately $16 million for the Malaria Consortium’s SMC programs outside of the Sahel: approximately $1.4 million for SMC in Karamoja, Uganda, and approximately $14.6 million for SMC in Nampula, Mozambique. This funding will allow the Malaria Consortium to maintain last year’s level of support for the upcoming SMC season in both countries.

GiveWell considers both programs to be cost-effective and saw a temporary funding gap that likely could not have been filled otherwise. Pilot studies have shown the effectiveness of SMC in both countries, and GiveWell has received strong recommendations from both the Malaria Consortium and other SMC stakeholders for the implementation of SMC programs outside the Sahel.

However, GiveWell still sees some unanswered questions regarding the evidence on the effectiveness of SMC in preventing malaria deaths outside the Sahel, given the higher resistance to SMC drugs in this region, and how the current funding gap will evolve in response to changing views on SMC outside the Sahel. As time is of the essence, GiveWell has recommended that the program be supported for one year to ensure that the program can continue into the next SMC season while these outstanding issues are further explored.
