Methodology
Each spin picks a country at random, weighted by the number of children born there each year: the more births a country has, the more likely you are to land there. The figures you see – life expectancy, income, schooling and more – describe the average life of someone born in that country.
Birth numbers (population × birth rate) and nearly all figures come from Our World in Data, which processes data from the United Nations, the World Bank and other sources. Passport power comes from the Passport Index. Data as of October 13, 2026.
The Birth Lottery is an idea by Giving What We Can, whose version we have adapted for Effektiv Spenden. We hope it builds empathy, sparks curiosity and encourages informed conversations about global inequality.
