“Our ability to donate gives us a kind of superpower: it allows us to support the work of those groups that are most effective in making progress on the issues we want to tackle.”
William MacAskilll
The influential philosopher William MacAskill, who is also one of the founders of “Effective Altruism,” argues compellingly in a wonderful guest article on ZEIT ONLINE that we need to do more to protect the interests of future generations. He describes this primarily through the challenges and long-term impacts of the climate crisis, but also shows which approaches can help – using the example of Germany’s solar subsidies in the early 2000s, which significantly contributed to making solar power so affordable and competitive worldwide today. (Will calls the subsidies “one of the most effective measures ever taken to combat climate change.”)
Above all, he points out that we can all contribute with money or time to preserve our future. And that is exactly what we aim to do at Effektiv Spenden : ensuring that every donor can unlock the “superpower” of giving by supporting the most promising and effective organizations, especially in the areas of “Mitigating climate change” and “Safeguarding the future”.
